<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There was a time in my life where drawing pirates was a more central part of my day-to-day activities. Here is a sampling of a couple of skeletal pirates along with a piratey monkey character from those richly rewarding days. They are <a href="http://www.ebay.com/itm/82-Steve-Purcell-Monkey-Pirate-/221311846726?pt=Art_Drawings&hash=item338736c946">original sketches</a> on separate sheets but framed together at 18 X 22 inches. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Late last year a hugely talented colleague of ours, <a href="http://www.james-baker.com/news/">Jamie Baker</a>, had the poor luck to suffer a stroke a few weeks before his company health insurance kicked in, and is facing huge medical bills. The proceeds of this auction will help him pay down that debt and continue his promising recovery. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you're a fan of any of <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=steve+purcell+monkey+island&client=safari&rls=en&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=pnp8UsOKLefTiwKM8IGgCw&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1247&bih=661">my old pirate or monkey-related art</a> or know some who is, please bid or pass along word of the auction. But, good cause or not, go browse around, as there are <a href="http://www.ebay.com/sch/nerve_bomb/m.html?item=221311846726&pt=Art_Drawings&hash=item338736c946&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562">dozens of rare and beautiful works</a> by many well-known animation industry artists. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the meantime, I will see if I can find some more detailed scans of these pieces.</div>

Here's a bizarre piece that is part of the current <a href="http://iam8bit.com/">i am 8 bit</a> show, an exhibition of artwork inspired by the classic era of video games.<br />
<br />
Any time I've been involved with the show I've taken the opportunity to depict my favorite malevolent game character, <a href="http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=9553">Sinistar</a>. This painting depicts him in what could be considered a moment of conflict for his countless evil deeds.<br />

Here is an early character sketch of Merida's dad, King Fergus from the Pixar film "Brave". We always knew we wanted a blocky, furry, jovial chunk of a guy. I dashed out this painted sketch early on trying to capture some sense of his personality.<br />

I'm pretty happy with the colors otherwise there are some other issues that I would treat differently if I allowed myself some more time. I expect I'll take another whirl with this character. Her name is Merida, the lead from Pixar's "Brave" coming out next summer. It's a project I've been involved with for quite a while, also known as my "day job". <br /><br />Acrylic and Prismacolor 8 X 20<br /><br />--StarchieStarchie Spudnoggenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06322282518688461648noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32025621.post-41509929924891548852011-09-06T00:17:00.000-07:002011-09-06T00:30:48.682-07:00The Li'lest X-Wing Pilot<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_BQ3p2kk9sxF1RJ5gbM2Co0dHeV4klY21AZmt8Y2jwn8M4jskPLE_lrLA7yjjOzJ6NghRz1hCpCHi9NiXPVBPy7JuwRshEL7LJK90l1NBfucIll98lOfo3B4ze2hpYifGzH6p/s1600/LilPilot.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 283px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_BQ3p2kk9sxF1RJ5gbM2Co0dHeV4klY21AZmt8Y2jwn8M4jskPLE_lrLA7yjjOzJ6NghRz1hCpCHi9NiXPVBPy7JuwRshEL7LJK90l1NBfucIll98lOfo3B4ze2hpYifGzH6p/s400/LilPilot.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5649142671567839010" /></a><br />At the risk of further ratting myself out as a kit basher or doll maker here's another impulse project. Due to my severe brain cel loss and lead poisoning I don't tend to remember the names of these locations or much about the creation of these backgrounds, except that they were to be done in markers, so this one is a value sketch to spot the light source and shadows in anticipation of doing the final color art. <br /><br />I do remember adding the ropes and hardware in the right foreground, thinking it would be fun to have the character pass behind those elements to create depth. Also I would look for opportunities to add fun details like the spitoon with overshot loogies all over the doorframe. I also liked adding anachronistic elements like the 50's era jukebox which sadly appears not to have made it into the final background. <br /><br />Pen and Marker 8X10<br /><br />--StarchieStarchie Spudnoggenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06322282518688461648noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32025621.post-8475884250868065772011-02-22T14:30:00.000-08:002011-02-22T15:44:01.231-08:00A Stone Monkey Head<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmTp4yODMpkn8XRmIQ9BO1WOhStmFq4Q44fLfNn0aXcY_hgav4nm-X1TQgfrGcBzPO2IdWvhgWRAYHOJrtcgma2aIv3RZspB2EUif8tuDQL2d3z4pqPsD-cpbLR7Ry5ZPA_2y5/s1600/MI_Idol_Purcell.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 260px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmTp4yODMpkn8XRmIQ9BO1WOhStmFq4Q44fLfNn0aXcY_hgav4nm-X1TQgfrGcBzPO2IdWvhgWRAYHOJrtcgma2aIv3RZspB2EUif8tuDQL2d3z4pqPsD-cpbLR7Ry5ZPA_2y5/s400/MI_Idol_Purcell.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5576645272867857314" /></a><br />I don't see this one online right now. Here is an image I did one year for the folk's Christmas card depicting their schnauzer, Max. I think I based the composition on a found Christmas hang tag or something. I believe their dog was still living at the time, though the image might suggest otherwise. </div><div><br /></div><div>4X6 Gouache and ink</div><div><br /></div><div>--Starchie<br /><div><br /></div><div><br /></div></div>Starchie Spudnoggenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06322282518688461648noreply@blogger.com2
