Suda

My favorite Suda painting so far. Washy acrylic over a barely there pencil sketch. Done a couple of years ago and made its way into one of the Spectrum annuals. I like doing this character though I sometimes have trouble capturing the version I have in my head. This one is as close as I get.

Yeah, not capturing what you picture in your head is the story of my life. I doubt it ever goes away, no matter how skilled you are.

Tom totally missed you at the con, but I'm sure a good time was had by all.

Great, great work Steve. If you don't mind me asking I've got a quick question for you. As an artist, writer and a creator in general, who do you feel are some of your biggest influences?

Your designs and paintings are both big-time! Great stuff.

Ooh, I do like the expression the rat has. Who knew a rat could elicit such sympathy from me, when they're normally smelly dirty creatures. And he's not even clean like Stuart Little? I like this painting, it's pretty dark. Glad you started this blog.

This is such a fabulous piece - it just begs to have a Danny Elfman soundtrack behind it

great works. I really like what you didi for the black bearded pirate and his velvety coat with all the skulls on it. I can see him getting modeled and textured in 3d for sure. very nice.

hmmm I dunno what to say about it. The smile is cute and the way she's standing there innocently but... her eyes appear somewhat scary, open wide like she had drunk the whole annual production of coffee from Brazil within several minutes. Maybe she does it in her freetime ;)
The only thing, I kinda miss in this painting, is some background painting. I see the sunflower, the rat backing against it and those flying insects including her little fella. Well maybe it's better the way you realized it, since it puts the attention to all elements, but I think, the eyes would come into it's own, if the background would be a little bit darker. It's just my opinion and the way I see it. I hope you won't delete my review.*hoping and crossing fingers*

I won't delete your your perfectly reasonable critique. But I am fairly satisfied with this one. I wanted the dark shape against the white background. And the eyes, they're specific to this character. I can't fully explain why. That's just what she looks like. I've done several of these against white. They'll probably all eventually be posted here. It's just a fun way for me to compose a shape and then carve the space in around it.

ben williams--
I'll post my influences on the profile at some point. Thanks for asking.

Having finally seen Sweeney Todd, I couldn't help but notice the amazing similarity between Helena Bonham Carter and Suda. Coincidence...?

I really haven't posted anything before, and I really wanted to contact you in some fashion. When I was younger my dad always had the spectrum books around, so I would look through them and for some reason, this painting was always my favorite, and it has always been in my mind. Then when I finally found your blog, and did more research I fell in love with the characters, I don't know if you have more than two comics but I love suda, and can kinda relate to her. I also think Ernie is so cute for some reason. And I love the dark style the characters are done in. I was going to ask for permission to get this as a tattoo, because it has been so important to me in its own way that i would love to have it forever. And this was the only way I could seem to contact you in anyway. I love this.
