Remember the Pencil?

These aren't quite storyboards, more like key frames from an expired development project I was involved in. I still have acres of this kind of stuff in my newly, somewhat organized flat files. I discovered the smudge stick from working with Garett Sheldrew who is a master of it, as well as any other medium he chooses.

I feel like I've seen a movie with a kind of demonic house just like this one...

Those are gorgeous! And I love the little smirk on all the faces.

I've never heard of a smudge stick. What is it? Google seems to think it's a pagan wand, which doesn't seem very useful when drawing with pencil.

The art supply catalog calls them "paper stumps"

Isn't that governor Marley's possessed mansion? I bet it is ;)

These are crazy cool, Steve.

I've gotten a similar effect using a clear brush felt tip to work over lead on canvas. Makes for great underpaintings - even lets you work in values.

Do you ever use harder pencil leads to sketch out the basics, or is your hand just this well trained?

Ahh! I remember those from art class but never heard them called smudge sticks or paper stumps. But come to think of it, I can't remember what we did call them.

Thanks for the link!
