Uncle Blue

Was out of town and delinquent in my posting. Hunted for something to post that might reference Yosemite, where I was last week. Saw a lot of ravens on the trip, heavy, muscley looking - my favorite birds. I'd like to paint some. Here's a little dip in that pool from a ways back.

Incredible atmosphere. I don't comment unless I'm reasonably impressed, and I've never seen someone deliver a good atmosphere like that.

I think this is my favorite one so far. I REALLY like the look of the raven.

Out of curiosity...do you have any larger scans of this one?

This is totally great. Wish it was higher res.

it's inspiring. I've been wanting to do this project with this one birdman character I invented....

Awesome Steve!
Ravens are my favorite bird as well. I really like the ones deep in the Mojave, they're very curious about everything you do.

Steve. This is totally great, man. I love this crow-dude. Just chilling there in his seat, pondering the universe with a vacant stare in his independently-rotating eyeball. Like the background wash too. Mr. Crow stands out really nicely ;)

Amazing work Mr Purcell.
I've been an avid fan of your work since the Monkey Island days, I hope to aspire to your level someday.

Would it be possible to post your process from sketch to final?

Was this one in a Pixar artist's gallery show in San Francisco a few years back?

I think that's where I remember it from. Anyway, it's one of the pieces that completely stuck in my mind and it's good to see it again!

chris--
Yes it was in that show. A coworker from Pixar bought it there. I have some other compositions in mind with this character. Thanks for posting.

I tend to post small scans so I don't fill up the hosting space too fast and to keep the images from being poached. Glad you like it.
